"I hope I didn't embarrass you, Lindsay, or your family,"  a words from David Letterman.

Letterman got big laughs on his show Wednesday night after directing a comment to Lindsay Lohan, saying he needed to "apologize" to her. Earlier in the day, a spokesperson for CBS' Late Show With David Letterman issued a statement saying that Lohan would not be appearing on the show, as previously announced, to deliver a Top 10 list.

"We made a mistake," the statement read. "Someone purporting to be a friend of Lindsay's reached out to the show yesterday, allegedly on her behalf, and booked her to appear. Clearly, this person was not authorized to make commitments on her behalf. We wish Lindsay well, and look forward to having her on the show in the future."

Lohan also chimed in via Twitter. "I am NOT going to be doing David Letterman, I'm not sure how this happened, but I am sorry for the confusion...," she wrote.

On Lettrman show Wednesday night, He explained to his audience how the whole thing happened, starting with his joke at Sunday's Grammy Awards in his Top 10 Grammy Surprises list: "Lindsay Lohan seen leaving Staples Center with Grammy-shaped bulge in her jacket," he quipped. "The next day I get a call and it's a guy and he says, 'Lindsay thought the joke was hilarious.' Now you know Lindsay is gonna stand trial for stealing stuff. So the guy says, 'Lindsay thought that joke was hilarious, she wants to be on your show,' and I said, 'Great, great!' " Letterman said, slapping his hand on his desk for emphasis.
