The Braveheart star and producer screened the picture at his home earlier this week (begs24Jan11) and placed it back in his mailbox ready for collection by a courier on Wednesday.
But the DVD was nowhere to be found when the delivery man arrived to pick up the package - prompting Gibson to report the incident to local authorities.
Officers at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department are now investigating the matter as a petty theft, reports TMZ.com.
Cops had yet to name any suspects in the crime as WENN went to press.
